This is what we believe!

Theology

Our foundational theological basis is the Apostles’ Creed. In seeking to understand how faith in God can be lived out in practice, the Bible is our ultimate guide. We believe that the whole of Scripture is inspired by God. It reveals His nature and His relationship with humanity.

As a church, we are on a continual journey of understanding and interpreting the Bible in the time we live in. In that process, we desire to remain open and attentive to what strengthens the community – always with a sensitivity to God’s voice and His work among us.

We acknowledge that God can speak through people. The role of the community is to discern and test what is spoken, maintaining a healthy balance between spirituality and sound judgment.

Individual freedom is important to us. We are not masters over one another’s faith – but co-workers in it. Therefore, theological breadth and generosity are essential within our fellowship.

(simplified and abbreviated version)

Apostolic Foundation

Sønderborg Free Church grounds its name apostolic in the classical understanding: We desire to be founded on the apostles’ teaching and to live inspired by the early Christian church we meet in the New Testament, having it as our example. At the same time, we recognize the church’s sent and missional nature.

Faith in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

We confess faith in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and affirm the classical Trinitarian articles of faith. We see the work of the Holy Spirit as an active and central part of the life of the church and acknowledge the renewal brought by the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. Spiritual gifts and ministries are, for us, essential expressions of apostolic church life.

The Purpose of the Church

We believe that the purpose of the church is to love God and to love one’s neighbor – both Godward and worldward. The church is called to bring unity and reconciliation, to be available to God in service and worship, to include people from every walk of life, and to share the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed.

The Bible as Authority

We confess the Bible as the inspired Word of God and the supreme authority for faith, teaching, and life. Baptism presupposes a personal faith and confession in Jesus Christ as Lord.

Ministry and Leadership

We believe that God has placed many ministries within the church for the building up of believers, so that all may serve with their gifts and callings. The congregation is led by a plurality of ministries, as broadly represented as possible, and remains under apostolic oversight to ensure health and direction.
